    Blurdee-blardee marieeeeeed, todaaaaaaay!!!!!

    By briantologist | December 27, 2003

As Darleece and I were gorging ourselves on spring rolls tonight, bitching about how stupid it is when people think it’s impossible to be a moral person without religion, it occurred to us that our dear friends Max Power and Chesty LaRue are getting married tomorrow. Up until now their impending nuptials have existed mostly in theory, and as a convenient device for irritating Max (“Hey, did you know you’re getting married in six days? Just checking.”).

It’s kind of weird. I think we’re in mid-avalanche of weddings among our friends; you may recall Dr. Voltron & Shaniqua‘s wedding this summer, and the included drunkfest that involved. Now Max & Chesty are hitching. Sometime in 2004, The Cheat & Lady Cheatterly are jumping the broom. And I’ve got other friends whose hitchitude can’t be far off.

I guess it makes me feel old, but it’s not like that’s anything new at this point. Plus, of course, that’s self-indulgent horse shit. But it is kind of weird to see the lifelong committments of your closest friends lined up like dominoes, ready to roll right over. On the whole it’s slower than a domino drop, but as I’ve been drinking, please bear with me.

A larger, perhaps slightly more coherent point is that it certainly seems like some sort of gateway, life-wise, between adolescence and … sorry, what comes after that? It is pretty weird, when you’re in the middle of the prolonged late teen years that constitute the lives of practically everyone I know within my demographic, to be marking events like these, which long ago seemed to be gateways to “ADULTHOOD,” whatever that may have meant once long ago. Now, it’s more a guarantee of reduced expenses for rent, cable, bills, and home entertainment systems. Or in Darleece’s case, increased expenses in paying for Garden Skillets purchased by one’s reprobate husband in 1997. Plus six years’ interest at 18 percent.

None of which is either here nor there. Congratulations, Mat and Julie. I’ve considered you basically married as long as I’ve known you, but here’s to making it official. You get lots of gifts for doing so, and what’s not to love about that? We get free hooch and food when you do so, and what’s not to love about that?
