    Classics of West Coast literature

    By briantologist | January 15, 2004

So with a gift certificate I got for XXX-mas, I bought a few CDs at Borders last week, and am now getting around to listening to them in the car. This takes a while, as since I live about four minutes away from work, I don’t end up getting a lot of listening done while driving. Though on the plus side, everywhere I need to go is about one song away, which, if you time it right, can make for a tidy little listening experience.

So in addition to Hank Williams III’s latest, which is simultaneously eerie and fucking awesome, and which I’ll probably go on and on about at a later date, I picked up Snoop Dogg’s first album, which I’ve never bothered to listen to. I remember when I was in college and the album came out. I was way too busy hoping Guns ‘N’ Roses wouldn’t break up to bother listening to it, and man, it’s my loss.

There’s just something inherently likable about Snoop. I think it’s that no matter how worked up he might get about stuff, his manner is pretty much the same. For example, during the part in “Murder Was the Case” when he finds himself in Hell, about to make a deal with tha Devil so he can become the playa he is today, he says to himself, “Damn, I see demons.” He just throws it in there as an afterthought. He’s not upset, but he understands he’s in some shit just the same.

    Damn.

I fell in love with Snoop when he was rhymin’ with Dre on the Chronic album.

Dude, for real. The Chronic was the shiznit. One of the “best” rap albums ever made. Forget about 2pac, forget about B.I.G (although he rocked much for a large man). Dre and Snoop brought it to a new level with this one. I should be on Yo MTV raps or something like that.

Fa shizzle. Funnily enough, one of my resolutions is to learn all the words to Gin and Juice.

I know all of the words to Gin and Juice thanks only to the awesome cover by the ladies in Sissy Bar.

I think “G&G” wins the award for rap anthem covered by the largest number of liiiiiily-white bands. Aforementioned girl group cover, and then there’s that ubiquitous country-ish version of it by some bunch of fat-sounding white guys.

      Okay, two covers. But still.

I drank a G&J in Portland and it damn near made me see god. I have got to get that recipe. The juice was grape, I think that had something to do with it.
