D’oh.
By briantologist | March 22, 2004
I just got back from a media preview of the Coen brothers’ new flick. I’m at this point with the Coen brothers where it’s very difficult for me to tell whether I just like their work as a whole so much that I give them blanket approval, regardless of the quality of the actual film of theirs I’m seeing, or if I just like the film I’m seeing, period. I can’t say for sure right now which it is, and as such I’m withholding comment.
In other news, even though this movie preview thing threw a wrench into “Operation: Walk, Bitch! I SAID WALK!”, I’m kind of chomping at the bit to walk to work again tomorrow. I’m sure it’s because the weather’s so goddamn nice; I wish I had a way of filing away my enthusiasm for use this summer, when it’s 172 degrees and I smell like a regiment from the B.O. army. Still, though, I’m on it. I’m on it like a bonnet.
In conclusion, let me simply say that the humor in picking Gonzaga to win the NCAA Tournament tends to taper off just past halftime of the game in which they get their asses handed to them by motherfucking Nevada. Stupid Gonzaga. Stupid Nevada assbitches. Stupid sense of humor.

Have you seen the Alec Guinness/Peter Sellers original? I happened upon it through Netflix a couple of months ago, and so I was very excited to hear that the Coens were remaking it… it seemed like Hanks is channeling Guinness pretty well, from the previews…

I channel Guinness every chance I get. But that’s different…

I used to be a huge Coen brothers fan. But I sort-of lost track of their movies. Wasn’t a big fan of a couple more recent ones, and have yet to see a couple others. I think I need to re-Coen-ize myself.

Yeah, Tom Hanks is pretty goddamn funny, still. My first impression sitting in the theater was that the bit he does is funnier in the quick cuts you see in the previews than in long format, but I have yet to give it any serious thought. I guess I could’ve worked on that on the way to work this morning.

I have a love/hate relationship with Tom Hanks. I understand he can be really good, but for some reason I can’t stomach watching him on screen. I think it’s because of all of his serious roles. I have the same feeling about Brendan Fraser, but he really does suck so it’s totally legit.
Still, this movie looks good. Kind of like how Road to Perdition was awesome despite my initial cringing over yet another serious Tom Hanks role. It’s nice to see him doing comedy again.
I forgot what my point was…

I’m skeptical of this because I’m a huge fan of the Guiness/Sellers original. I will give it a chance but I have a hard time seeing Tom Hanks in the same Light as Alec Guiness,

I like Tom Hanks and Brendan Frasier. They’ve both done good jobs playing retards and gaywads, which I always appreciate in an actor.

I can’t hate Brendan Fraser. I hope he and Sandra Bullock make a movie soon.

That Sandra Bullock part is a joke right? Please say it’s a joke.

It’s no joke. Speaking for myself, on balance, there are so many people in Hollywood who deserve my hatred more than Sandra Bullock, I can’t even begin to get into it.
I mean, just think of Madonna alone. If I quit my job so I could hate full-time, when I retired at age 70 I’d still have only produced an eighth of the hate Madonna demands during a single year.
Sandra Bullock, on the other hand, has never claimed to be anything other than what she presents herself as: A movie star. Someone who appears frequently in movies. Some are pretty good; many are dumb. Often the pretty good ones are dumb. But on the whole, Sandra Bullock does so much less harm than, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger, that I’m willing to give her a free pass.

Word, baby. I can’t help but love Sandra Bullock.
