    Greece: Actually the Word?

    By briantologist | April 29, 2004

Okay, seriously, is anybody else wondering if Athens is gonna have the Olympic facilities built in time for the actual Olympics? I know there’s been some problems with the roof of the main stadium, but the way people in the non-Greek media have been covering Greece’s preparations (such as they are), I get the impression they overslept for about the first three of the seven years they had to get ready.

I mean, I’m not saying my expectations of the Greek government are high: As Jimmy Jam always liked to point out, it is a third-world country, they don’t technically have a stock exchange, and their military consists of eight guys with bows and arrows whose last names end in -olous sleeping off their hangovers in a used Ford Aerostar. Their attitude toward the roof is kind of hilarious, though — from what I can tell, their position amounts to, “Hey, we get the roof on, we get the roof on; we don’t get the roof on, eh, whaddya gonna do?” I applaud their stoicism, I guess. I’m just not sure the athletes will when they’re running the marathon in late-summer Mediterranean heat.

I know they’re the cradle of civilization and all, or of democracy, or of hot man-love, or one of the above. They deserve some credit for that. But c’mon, guys. You invented the goddamn Olympics! The eyes of the world will be upon you in a relatively short time! At least put on a clean shirt!

God, wouldn’t that be awesome if they had to compete in the nude!

That would rock ass if the Greeks got all hard-nosed and old-school about it. “Bitch, we invented this shit! Drop those motherfuckin’ pants!”

I’m considering throwing a drunken opening ceremonies party. Everyone has to represent a nation. I’m United Arab Emirates.

i would become an olympic athlete, well, like now, if they were going to do things right.
      you know, naked and all.

ok, actually maybe not. i think a marathon would mean a lot of unnecesary chafage.

You forgot to mention that those guys who are supposed to be building the roof are probably hangin out at the local dunkin’ donuts with the entire greek police force.

      Man, gotta love those guys.
