I opened up the sports page yesterday, and there at the top of the page, in 2,231-point type, was the following:
Okay, okay, I know it’s his nickname and all, but people, come on.
I speak from experience here: When you’re writing headlines at a newspaper, things happen to your sanity. You start looking for even the thinnest opportunity to use half-formed ideas you’ve had in the past to craft witty headlines.
And sometimes — like when this guy, Randy Johnson, aka “The Big Unit” (he’s like six-foot ten) pitches a perfect game — sometimes, the opportunity gets so good, you just absolutely can not pass it up.
It’s just such an easy gag, though. I just wish the pukes at the sports desk had tried a little harder with this one.
