So long, creepy old guy
By briantologist | September 22, 2004
Russ Meyer has shuffled off this mortal coil, no doubt to some weird old-guy fantasy land where 22-year-old white girls not wearing their 44HH brassieres serve him appletinis and do dances from “Laugh In.”
In honor of this uniquely American weird old guy, who built an empire and made a decent living from his obsession with enormous breasts, probably you should watch “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” tonight.

Why, oh WHY is BTVOTD not yet available on DVD?

You can still get it on VHS, and that, my friends, is sufficient reason to keep your VCR. I suspect Roger Ebert is having the DVD release suppressed. God, that movie rules.

Meyer’s always been a real freak about releasing his movies on home video. “BTVD” is the only one I know that’s available at a reasonable price, and is somewhat easy to get. As far as I know, most of his other stuff is only available directly from his web site, http://www.rmfilms.com, and it’s all like 80 bucks per cassette.
BTVD aches, I say aches, for a DVD release. My hope is that the bright spot of his death will be an eventual release, crammed with extras. I understand Ebert’s comfortable with his work on the film; it’s kind of awesome that it’s the only screenplay he’s ever written.

God, what I wouldn’t give to kill tonight on your couch in a boxed wine and BTVOD haze. Also, some dolls would be nice.

Dolls are always nice.

I just posted my own Meyer tribute, complete with some dirty pics.
I’ve gotta say, the relative unavailability of Meyer’s movies on home video has really fueled his underground aura, for years now. Most people still see a Meyer film in a theatre, at an art house, a midnight movie, or a film festival. Which is probably the way crazy ol’ Russ wanted it.
BTVD is a great laugh, but you can also find Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! on VHS in some rental stores, and I much prefer it. (Star Video on 11th used to have it in Tulsa. Too bad Star Video has been closed for years…) It’s Meyer’s best expression of himself, although it doesn’t have much nudity. (Darn!)
I recommend Mondo Topless for that, which, true to its title, has a lot of toplessness.

Roger Ebert just cut a commentary track for BTVOTD which Criterion will be releasing at a later date. Ebert popped the news and did a tribute to Russ on his show this weekend. Maybe they’ll release more at a later date. Just wanted to pass on the info.
By the way, I’ve been reading your blog for a while now (which cracks my large ass up) but it took the naked chick to get me to post something on it. I figured I owed it to you.

Bless you, TJ, you’re always welcome. Especially when you’re bearing badass news like that! Mmmmmm. Criterion.
