Illusion: Used
By briantologist | February 26, 2005
Response to project: Reuse Your Illusion has been overwhelming. And by “Overwhelming,” I mean “Nearly eight.” To all those of you to whom I’ve pledged a copy, rest assured it’s a-comin’. Though since I’m a lazy beeyotch, the discs won’t actually go out in the mail until Monday. This, I remind you, is because I am a terrible person. With extremely limited respect for copyright law.
Though upon listening to the disc all the way through, I’m now immediately assailed by doubts and self-second-guessing. For example, should I have included “Bad Obsession”? Dr. 12 fucking hates that song, and all of a sudden I sorta feel like I should too. I mean, I was DYING to include “14 Years” on it, but ultimately bumped it, in part to accommodate the 9-and-a-half-minute “Estranged,” which I suddenly kind of also feel like a schmuck for including. I mean, for the love of god, you’re allowed one song of more than eight minutes per album, and clearly “November Rain” is the keeper from the two discs. Yet they put THREE onto two discs: “November Rain” (8:57), “Estranged” (9:23), and “Coma” (10:16)(!!). And I included two of these three! Some editor I am! Sheesh.
This is why I should’ve mailed them yesterday, is all I’m saying. And to those of you who want a track listing, look, I said I’d mail you a CD just for the asking. I totally wasn’t kidding.

Does this mean you’ll be forced to release a second compilation CD?
:)

Nah, the playlist stands, for better or worse. But if you’d like a copy, again, e-mail me your mailing address and I’ll make it happen.

“Bad Obsession”? Half right.

I remember liking all those songs you mention at the time, but the only one I could even imagine listening to nowadays is “November Rain”. That said, “Estranged” was one of my favorites at the time, so that should earn it a place on the final disc.
BTW, if you want to kill some time, you should really check out the glowing reviews of these albums on Amazon. My favorite (so far) is this one of UYI2 by someone who dubs himself a “piano wizard and stage beast” :
Easily tied with some other albums for “Greatest of All Time”, “Use Your Illusion II” is the one review I kept putting off, not thinking I could ever be in the proper state of mind to give this piece of music the justice and worship that words can never express. Well, I’ve obviously started typing, so let’s see what happens…

The second sentence of that paragraph is irreparably at odds with the first. And that’s just a structural problem, ignoring the obvious content flaws. That’s impressive. It takes most people years to work up to that level of incorrectness. Good work, random Amazon guy.

That’s just an excerpt. You should look up UYI2 just to read the rest of the review. Another of my favorite lines :
This album is epic (did I mention that?). When you are down and out, ready to give up, think all hope has gone, etc., etc….. you do NOT go to Nirvana. you do NOT go to Britney Spears. No, my friends (and enemies), you go to this album, track 11. There you will find the reason music exists. Heart and soul, blood and guts, tears, catharsis, anger, rage, emotion of the highest form, a purging of all of your demons: THAT is what will be injected into your veins when you listen to one of the greatest songs ever, “Estranged.”
