Los Hangeles

Los Angeles is huge and bright and incredibly smoggy, and the weather is so pleasant it makes me want to cry. For some reason the smog and the hugeness didn’t quite sink in the last time Ern and I were here, but as the plane banked to start its approach to tiny, bizarre Bob Hope International Airport in Burbank, I saw the entire L.A. basin obscured by a massive blanket of auto exhaust, to the point where not only could I note see the mountains that border the valley on the far side, I couldn’t see the ground in most places. At home the state department of environmental quality has occasional “Ozone Alerts” during the summer, days when we’re in danger of exceeding some standard or another of airborne pollutants. I think the valley’s Ozone alert would need to last about a month and a half and completely forbid driving before things started clearing up.
I had some surprisingly good vegan food last night with my glorious host tom, at Real Food Daily in West Hollywood. I say surprisingly because, while I’d like to be all magnanimous and talk about how open I am to new things at all hours of the day and night, the truth of the matter is that I’m old and fussy and have it drilled into my head that there’ll be an empty spot in my stomach after any meal that doesn’t include meat of some kind. A hole in my lower intestine would be closer to the truth, a spot that would’ve been occupied by the chunk of beef I’d normally have eaten, which then would’ve lingered for the rest of my life and killed me at age 58. Anyway, the food was fucking awesome, and I ate way too much of it, but that’s really the food’s fault for being so awesome. I mean, all I did was sit there shoveling it down. It could’ve at least tried to stop me.
Today I’ll be meeting briefly with (Domo Oregato) Mr. Roberto, then having dinner with the Gin ‘n’ Juice contingent, who will be flying into LAX, renting a car, and disappearing into traffic, never to be heard from again. They’ve been great friends to Ern and me, and it was nice knowing them.
