    Oh, that is it.

    By briantologist | May 7, 2006

All right, Internets. ELB and I are moving to Chicago, and there’s not a damn thing you can do to change our minds.

Go ahead, tell us it’s more expensive to live there. Tell us it gets cold there during winter. Tell us we don’t know anybody there. And I’ll tell you you’re a LIAR! A LYING LIAR WHO TELLS LIES!

Okay, not about the first two things. Those things are true. Also true is the fact that with every breath I draw after E and I made this decision, I am breaking my mother’s heart just a little bit more, so that by the end of the day it is reduced to a mushy paste, only to be reconstituted again the following morning so the entire process can be repeated. Their first and only grandchild will now live a twelve-hour drive away, and that grandchild will be supporting his senile father before said father lives down this guilt.

But we are moving anyway. Because of many things. E’s new job could not possibly be any cooler, for one; Chicago is awesome times six, for another; I will never challenge myself while living in Tulsa, for yet another. This is an important fact I’ve come to realize about myself: Once I know what I can get away with, in terms of the way I go about living, it is almost entirely unlikely that I will perform above that level. And we live comfortably, even well, in Tulsa, and this would be great if I were better at operating outside my comfort zone when not forced to. And I am not better, or even good, at doing so.

Blah de-blah blah blah, so yes, we’re totally fucking stoked about moving, and going out of our minds about selling our house in three weeks. We’ve got an apartment lined up in the Chi, a beauty from the looks of it, so that just leaves this minor financial obligation here to unburden ourselves of. And y’know, the packing, and the moving, and the whatnot.

So, in closing, if you or anyone you know are interested in a fantastically located, reasonably priced, positively charming craftsman bungalow in lovely Midtown Tulsa, do not hesitate to call me, e-mail me, or bang on my bedroom window until I wake up. Major appliances (practically new!) are included in the asking price.

    Seriously, please buy our house.

Wow! Congrats! Suddenly everyone is moving to Chicago!

But, most importantly, what about the kitties!?! How do they feel about the move?

Woohoo! I love Oklahoma, but leaving changed my life. Also, you know how they say Chicago is really windy? So not true. Oklahoma is waaaay windier. But anyway, good luck!

You need to go to second city, and eat at the frontera grill, for starters.

also, brian, this is for you.

I think the argument “but you don’t know anyone there” is really funny. That’s part of the charm. Now you can really burst through your crusty Oklahoma identity & form your own life. I’m elated for you!

It’s also brave & honorable to go for a job outside of the state & GET THE JOB! Chicago is lucky to have such a family move to their township!

Dude and dudet, I am very excited about your decision for completely selfish reasons… It gives me another bullet to help guilt the wife into letting us move there. Thanks and you three will do great there. Chicago is an amazing city to be in for three or four days. I can only imagine what it would be like to live there.

Welcome to the neighborhood. It’s a great town. In spite of the winters, I think you’ll love it here. It’s nice to have a very funny talented family moving to our fair city. Congrats.

congrats! And don’t worry, Chicago is called “the windy city” because it used to be a big politicians’ town and it was called that because politians blow a lot of air with all their jabbering lies, and with all the air been blown about it got that nickname! Hee! Etimology is fun!

Chicago is so freakin’ cool… I love that city with a mad passion… The museums and the art and the pizza and the EVERYTHING. You are going to have the best time.

And when people come over to look at your house, turn on every single light, grind a lemon in the garbage disposal and brew a pot of vanilla coffee to make your house smell yummy. Trust the power of the vanilla coffee.

I’m pursuing editorial work. Also known as “Watching television with our baby.” Wish me luck.

The kitties seem excited. Trucky keeps muttering something about running whiskey in from Canada. I think he’s been talking to Sal. Plus Gus is totally stoked about going to an “Oprah” taping. And Smudge wants to go hang out on the South Side, though she won’t say why.

Ok I have no idea how I started reading your blog but I have to warn you, There are NO 90210 reruns on cable (comcast) in Chicago! Your enthusiasm for all things 9-0 is probably why I continue to tune back in. Besides my friend Katy and I, I don’t know anyone who loves it as much as me.

I live here and it’s been a torturous couple of years since they stopped playing them on FX. If you go for satellite dish you might be able to get them, but I thought I’d better warn you. Anyway if you’re looking for good restaurants or anything else while you’re settling in feel free to drop me a line!

Okay, is it bad that my first reaction, upon reading this, was “OMGOMG I am SO EXCITED you’re moving TO MY FABULOUS TOWN!” and then kind of realized that I don’t actually know you, so we probably won’t hang out. But, YOU WILL LOVE IT! I love it so much.

Happy for you. Sad for Tulsa. But you go where you’re needed, and Chicago needs to experience the fury of the Byrneunit and the undeniable cuteness of The Bean.

Best of luck and congrats all around. I can’t wait to read all about your adventures!

I see how this works. I just start getting to know you, and you move away. It’s just like in third grade when Billy said he wasn’t my friend any more and asked the teacher if he could change reading groups. Well, not quite that bad, I guess.

Of course, since I’ve only met one of you, and that briefly, I suppose our virtual acquaintanceship won’t change all that much.

Your move will be much like my recent move, but in reverse. I came down here from St. Paul, MN. I can tell you one thing. From a political standpoint, you are making an extremely positive change. Though two fewer open-minded people in Tulsa is bad for us.

I will really miss the Briantological weather reports, too.

while nothing can replace lost years apart from family, the people and experiences you have in a place such as IL will shape you into new (better?) people. you will think differently, see things differently and know people you would never meet in tulsa. this is something too few people realize when one takes on the challenge of turning your life upsidedown and going for it. don’t look back and tell the grams to get frequent flier plans. congratulations!
