oh for fuck sakes lighten up already.

    By briantologist | March 6, 2007

Okay, thanks, thanks. I feel a little better. Also thanks to former recent Battlestar Galactica booster Gleemonex for asking me (and you too, Internets) what’s currently at #27–#32 on our household’s Netflix queue. I happen to think it’s a damn fine question.

#27: Love and Death on Long Island

    #28: Boys Don’t Cry

    #29: Waking Life

    #30: Sunset Boulevard

    #31: The Apartment

    #32: Some Like It Hot

Man, I am never gonna Watch “Boys Don’t Cry.” Not because it’s not a good movie, but because think about this: It’s Friday night, you’ve just put the kid to bed, you’re fucking beat from work, and you’re waiting for the delivery guy to bring your samosas. Tell me how likely this statement is to actually issue forth from your lips: “Honey, I know! Let’s kick back and throw in ‘Boys Don’t Cry’! I hear she gets beaten to death at the end!”

Right. That’s also about how likely it is to happen at our house. Miraculously we made ourselves watch “Hotel Rwanda” under similar circumstances, but I’m thinking that kind of resolve is sort of a fluke.

In other news, apparently I went on a Billy Wilder kick at some point in my queue-building activities.

Falling is a bummer. I’m sure Henry is fine. Are you OK? I fell on the ice last week. Odd that my first reaction is always to be embarassed when I fall.

Funny, that’s why Syriana has mysteriously remained at #16 for months, and Lost Boys of Sudan holds steady at #37 …

Remind me to tell you the story about how I went to high school with the cousin of the guy who beat Hillary Swank’s character to death.

(Actually, that’s pretty much the story.)

Incidentally, I’d sacrifice a teste to have Ms. Swank trade places with the unfoortunate transgendered one on that fateful evening.

      32. 24: Season 3, Disc 1

I can’t believe we both have Some Like It Hot. However, you may have gotten sucked into the AFI Top 100 Film List. That’s what motivated me to go back and add every film from the list that I hadn’t seen to my queue. I’m not saying it will stay that way, but I had the best of intentions.

    15. Michelle Says:

      32. The Wedding Banquet

And it’s probably been that way for months on end, too…will I ever put any of these movies up toward the top?! Not bloody likely…

    16. briantologist Says:
      March 7th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

That was totally what got those movies in my queue, the AFI 100! Also Ebert’s list, I think.

Add me to the “Some Like It Hot” roster – that’s really weird:

      27. Tales Of The City: Disc 1
      28. Some Like It Hot
      29. Arsenic And Old Lace
      30. Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
      31. All Quiet On The Western Front
      32. Father Of The Bride (1950)

Guess I was on a tour of the Classics section that day. Oh, and #33? The Bicycle Thief.

Perhaps everyone could put Some Like It Hot at the top of their queue and watch it before next week. Then we can all discuss.

I watched “Dancer in the Dark” under those circumstances. Never again. Those movies should only be watched at home in the afternoon where you can pause it and go outside and smell a flower or pet a puppy.

Dog Day Afternoon is awesome, I say. Also I watched Serpico when I was home sick yesterday, and it’s also very good. So big ups to the Sidney Lumet/Al Pacino pics, is what I guess I’m saying here.

This “Everybody Watches ‘Some Like it Hot’” idea isn’t bad! Anybody else up for this?

    22. Gleemonex Says:
      March 8th, 2007 at 10:48 am

Y’all go ahead — I saw it in two different film classes back when I was a wee undergrad, was tested on it and wrote papers involving it, and that’ll do me for a lifetime … ;-)

We watched that Scorcese My Voyage to Italy which forced all of these obscure and/or legendary Italian movies in to our queue. The Bicycle Thief is on 3 of the queues listed above – are we all watching the same things?

I’d be up for Some Like it Hot, but the S.O. (same one who has friggin animated batman on the list) hasn’t watched what we currently have at home in time for Some Like It Hot to get here. Of course I’ve seen it before, so perhaps I could participate in such a discussion.

OK, ‘fess up, who else moved stuff around before doing this, thus not ending up with this:

      27. Night Porter
      28. Master and Commander
      28. We Were Soldiers
      30. Before Sunrise
      31. Before Sunset
      32. Marathon Man

and instead ending up with something like this?

      27. Alphaville
      28. Sholay
      29. Lumumba
      30. Kagemusha
      31. Spook Who Sat By the Door
      32. Kandahar

Am I the only one that contemplated using this as an excuse to seem brainy and committed? Or is just that, like me, everyone else moves the abominations that they’re embarrassed to admit they have on their queue (King Arthur? Really?) up to the top 10?

I think the best (lowbrow) part of Netflix is the anonymous watching of horrible, horrible movies; movies you’d be embarrassed to even be in the same section as in real life. Movies like “A Cup of My Blood” which I got because the woman that Microsoft has cast in their terrible live person search engine gets nekkid in it.

It wasn’t worth it. I knew it wasn’t going to be, but I had to know FOR SURE. Yeah, it wasn’t.

(I haven’t dropped by your blog for ages. Hope all is well with the family!)

“Love and Death on Long Island” was terribly disappointing. I certainly appreciated the one poster’s comment about “Dancer in the Dark”. If I’d had that bit of advice before watching it, I might have felt an ounce better afterwards. But as it was, those damn hand-held cameras make me queasy as hell, which didn’t help my disposition in the end. Beautiful movie though. “Some Like It Hot” is a favorite. Enjoy!
