    quit cataloging me

    By briantologist | December 17, 2007

I am overjoyed to share this article with all dozen or so of you who read this. It’s all about getting your name off junk mail lists, also known as the real-life spam you can’t get rid of by clicking your mouse. As someone who spends a great deal of time passively worrying about the environmental impact of the junk mail I don’t open — and more importantly, someone who spends even more time letting said junk mail pile up around the house while I wait to shred it, since 3/4 of it is for credit cards I’ll never apply for — I’m pretty thrilled at the notion of stanching the flow of crap to our coffee table and similar environs. I’m already willing to pay for the two pay services discussed in the article, and I’d probably be willing to pay more than they cost.

Even better: Most of these services seem to let you choose which catalogs you’d like to keep receiving, so you can keep thumbing through hundreds of pages of IKEA stuff that invariably looks better in the catalog than it does in your home, or dozens of pages of Pottery Barn merchandise you kind of like but would never pay that much for. Who, I say who? could ask for anything more? Other than free candy and unmentionables.

Sweeeet! Goddamn all those credit card promotions. GodDAMN they are the worst form of junk mail. Because you can’t just toss it in the recylce bin, you have to go on the defensive and shit. The sad thing though, is that it must work enough of the time, or they wouldn’t do it. I gotta have my random catalogs though. (I make postcards from them! no, really!)

I had already done the credit card offer thing, can’t wait to get fewer “wine enthusiasts” and their ilk. maybe my recycling bin will get lighter?
