EXTERMINATE!
By ELB | February 21, 2008
A few days ago I mentioned that I am totally obsessed with Torchwood and that obsession has only gotten worse since then. For real, I haven’t freaked out over a show like this since I started watching Buffy on FX. In fact, I might be more obsessed with Torchwood because, not only is the cast more attractive, SMG isn’t on the show dragging everything down. Not to mention the fact that Torchwood is way dirtier. Good times, that.
I spent many a day avoiding library school homework by reading Buffy fan-fic (and writing a little of my own). Now I spend my days avoiding housework by desperately trying to access the BBC Torchwood site that is not available to those who live outside the UK. This is driving me insane, for real. Doesn’t the BBC know that it’s wrong to deny me? How will I access the information regarding the pterodactyl? How can I fully inderstand Ianto’s feelings about watching the team kill his half-cyborg girlfriend if I don’t read the transcripts of his counselling sessions? I have exhausted all possible options, yet I still burn for more information! What’s a lame superfan to do?! Watch Dr. Who, that’s what.
My parents watched Dr. Who when I was little and I remember my mind being totally blown when the Fourth Doctor was suddenly the Fifth Doctor, whom I had already seen on All Creatures Great and Small. What the hell is going on here? Why is Tristan in space? The show confused the hell out of me anyway, switching the Doctors put me over the edge.
At age 5 remember thinking, “Now, Mom and Dad seem to really like this. The theme song is is pretty awesome, and I am definitely intrigued by the TARDIS, but everyone just stands around and talks all the time. Then the robots show up and everyone seems scared, but these robots are clearly not a threat.” Eventually I wondered off to the yard where I lay in the chigger-y grass, waiting for the Borrowers to show up and talk to me.
I guess I’ve been living in another universe for quite some time. But this new Dr. Who is way better than the old one. I just watched this one ep involving a trip back to the Blitz and a ghostly army of zombie kids that shuffle around asking, “Are you my mummy? Have you seen my mummy?” If they touch you, then you become a mummy-seeking zombie as well. I’m sure you all are saying, “Zombie kids? Lame.” But you wouldn’t say that if you knew these kids had gas masks instead of faces. Horror.
God, I guess I should stop researching the invisible lift and pay attention to my child before he develops a gas mask face and a lifetime of maternal resentment.

The zombie kids episode scared me silly. We don’t get BBC, so we’re relying on Netflix for our “Who” fix. “Torchwood” is next up in the queue.

Oh, God, as soon as you get it, write me and we will talk all day long! I can’t even deal. I’m sure Brian is just shaking his head, but things are actually working out ok because I watch Torchwood on the computer while he plays Halo. We’re well on our way to being a couple that never speaks to one another.

“Eventually I wondered off to the yard where I lay in the chigger-y grass, waiting for the Borrowers to show up and talk to me.”
God, who didn’t spend part of their childhood/ life in general waiting for something to happen, to talk to them, or a door to open, etc. I’m still incredibly disappointed, at 31, that this is the only reality I’m allowed access to.
And for Dr. Who, I remember only that my mom would watch it late at night, the theme song creeped me out, and there was one episode I managed to see with some huge green blob monster that ate people. Super freaky, at the time.

On the “Waiting for another reality to show up” index, I would like to state for the record that I’m still waiting for the Rebel Alliance recruiters to show up and accept me into the A-Wing pilot training school.

I don’t know any of the shows you’re talking about, but I do know that I’m blog-stalking you WAITING WAITING WAITING for my American Idol posts… what is up? I thought maybe you were just ignoring the audition shows, but surely you would post this week… I need some awesome commentary on the Top 24 before they’re all gone… Please, hurry, getting desperate, have been waiting since last May.

I too, Love Doctor Who, and as Nerdy as you guys know that I am, I actually never stopped watching. I love the new show and Torchwood.
There is also another spin-off mainly for kids, called the Sarah Jane Adventures. It went the opposite direction from Torchwood. Totally worth it, though. K-9 is in it, and she has a cool car and -get this- sonic lipstick!
I had to download it (as I do with Torchwood because the American versions take out the cursing and the nakedness*) but hopefully they will start playing it soon.

*that ep where the alien fucks you to death? WAY sexier in the UK version.

Man, Sheila, I have bad news. Neither Byrne has been able to stomach more than 5 minutes of Idol at a time. Maybe when it gets to the top 10 I’ll look it over, but as of right now, I’m not planning on any extensive Idol coverage.

I can’t stomach it either, just plain like this, the only thing that makes it bearable is knowing I can read your deliciously hilarious recaps, please please please, I know I’m not the only one, maybe I and the rest of the needy can band together and pay you?

I miss miss MISS Dr. Who. I was tricked by the awful Prairie Public Television, who said they were showing Dr. Who (where I once watched the old stuff), and it was the new.
This Dr. Who is just way too cool to seem mysterious. I remember watching Dr. Who then the space group whose ships were tiny models on strings in front of a space background and who beamed to other places by outlining their bodies with white crayon. Those were the days.

a UK proxy server should get you past the bbc’s restrictions on watching the episodes on the bbc uk site.
